I have been Interning at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum for a period of 8 weeks, with 2 weeks to go. My experience in the marketing department at the Guggenheim has given me insight into the strategies and campaigns that surround an art museums exhibitions. Throughout the internship I have completed an array of daily tasks including: social media tracking, promotional research and outreach, promotional post card mailings, auction and donation request, advertisement filing, management of hotel concierge relationships and application and website research.
The team at the museum works to try and integrate me into all on going projects. Specifically, I have seen the promotion and marketing research, outreach, implementation and conclusion of a 4- week off-site Guggenheim exhibit titled stillspotting: nyc, which has been taking place in Staten Island. This particular experience allowed me to work intimately with not only the marketing departments but also the education, PR, and curatorial departments.
Through the internship program, I have also been able to experience many aspects of NYC culture. Along with many gallery visits, I was able to tour the Guggenheim’s art storage facility (so cool) and participate in a mock auction at Sothebys. The internship also allowed me to attend a press preview for the current photography exhibition Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective. At the preview I was able to meet the artist, the director of the Guggenheim and many important people of the press.
The skills I will take away from this internship will be valuable in both my career goals and my graduate thesis. The opportunity to live in New York City has helped me consider other options after graduation, along with introducing me to a whole new group of friends ( yeah so they all go to Avalon, can’t help who I am). This internship has been an amazing experience that I will always take with me.
